World Mental Health Day is celebrated on 10th October and this year’s theme is – “Make mental
health & wellbeing for all a global priority”.
The World Health Organization explained, “Growing social and economic inequalities, protracted
conflicts, violence and public health emergencies affect whole populations, threatening progress
towards improved well-being; a staggering 84 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced
during 2021”.
It concluded, “We must deepen the value and commitment we give to mental health as individuals,
communities and governments and match that value with more commitment, engagement and
investment by all stakeholders, across all sectors”.
There are many and varied ways that businesses can play their part in spearheading change. But
truthfully, a layered approach is one of the most impactful.
A Four Tier Approach to Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing
Global businesses can positively impact their workforce across the globe. They can simultaneously
change the expectations and awareness that people have in different parts of the world. But it
doesn’t happen overnight.
A holistic top-to-bottom approach is needed to create the desired change; and approach that
encompasses –
– Industry – People working in any industry can suffer from mental health. But there are
certain sectors that are earmarked for their working practices and attitudes that aren’t
conducive to wellbeing. The hospitality and events industries are key examples. In response,
well-respected industry bodies can champion improved mental health awareness and
encourage leading lights in their sectors to be proactive around change.
– Business – Many businesses are taking mental health and workplace wellbeing more
seriously. But, the fact that there’s currently 4,000+ certified B Corporations globally reflects
a mere tip of the iceberg, (though B Corp includes many other elements besides workplace
wellbeing). This isn’t to suggest that businesses start clambering for B Corp status en masse.
There are many other quick and effective fixes that can identify, address and bake in good
mental wellbeing, such as –
– Wellbeing Manager programmes
– Mental health first aider training
– Mental health awareness training
– Team – It’s too easy for team wellbeing to slide down the priority list when businesses are
operating at a million miles an hour. But this is exactly when an insights programme can be
valuable. Whilst businesses get on with the day-to-day, workplace wellbeing experts can
assess the current position, and help to design a strategy, build awareness, and promote
engagement.
– Individual – An unempathetic workplace can be one of the loneliest places in the world for
team members with mental health issues. On the other hand, a more open and
understanding culture makes them feel more supported and less uncomfortable about speaking about their issues. To this end, an insights programme not only opens up narratives. In addition, it can include individually tailored self-care reports based on every team member’s current mental wellbeing.
