In a BBC article today, we read that 54% of commuters are using train wifi to send work emails
A new report today sheds further light on how much of our ‘personal’ time we are using to work. What are your thoughts? Here are ours:
You can read the full article here but I’m sure you have read this headline and gone, yes, that’s me! Technology has enabled us to work whenever and wherever we want but that should be the key – when we want – not because we can.
There is a call in the article to count these commuting working hours to our official working hours of the week. We at Stress Matters HQ are advocates of the fluid working approach – where you work to objectives, not to a set number of hours. Yes, there are industries such as retail where this doesn’t work, you have to be on the front desk or check-out at certain times, but I bet they’re not the people working on the train.
Those working on the train are the people that should have more control over the hours they work, that is if their company’s have a forward-thinking enough culture. And more than that, that the company has trust in their employees.
I have a creative industry background and there is always work to be done, it’s never ending. It requires self-discipline and a good culture to ensure you can switch off when needed. What I would like to know is does this study show that those 54% that are working on the commute also leave early that day to see their kid’s sports day or work from home a couple of days a week just because they can.
Are they working on the commute because they don’t have enough time in their day or are they doing it to enable them to use their day how they want?
What do you think? Do you work on your commute?
