Putting the right waste in the right recycling bins might make you feel like you’re doing your bit to help save the planet. And that’s great. But, have you ever considered just how closely interlinked our mental health and sustainable living are?
The World Health Organization’s World Health Day is celebrated on 7th April every year. This year’s theme for 2022 is ‘Our Planet, Our Health’.
It asks the questions –
“Are we able to reimagine a world where clean air, water and food are available to all?
Where economies are focused on health and well-being?
Where cities are liveable and people have control over their health and the health of the planet?”
The fact of the matter is that sustainability has an awesome impact on our sense of wellbeing. The more we become consciously aware of our daily sustainable activities, the more we experience a sense of alignment and purpose.
Dennis Relojo-Howell explained to Psychreg how our relationships extend beyond just people. In addition, we have relationships with things in our environments, such as our beds, our food and phones. He summarised, “When you make sustainable choices, in a similar way to getting that dopamine kick from helping someone in need, you get to feel good about the resources that you use and the choices that you make, which in turn improves your mental health.”
When a Stress Matters wellbeing assessment is deployed company-wide, it empowers you to delve deeper into any potential issues and areas for improvement around sustainability and mental health.
At Stress Matters, we’ve recently achieved B Corp status. That means we’re officially recognised for practising what we preach socially and environmentally. It’s an area we’re ready and able to visit with you to take a closer look at the effects sustainability might be having on mental health in your business.
